Adoption – Both Domestic and International

Adopting a child into your family is one of the kindest things any parent can do.  In this country and around the world, there are millions of children in need of loving parents.  Whether or not this will be your first child, there are number of things any family should do to pave the way for a smooth adoption process.  Adoptions do take time and it is important for everyone involved to be mentally prepared for this wait.  For any new addition to a family, make sure that all family members are looking forward to welcoming your new son or daughter.

The first step in any adoption, whether international or domestic, is filling out an adoption application.  Each adoption agency to which you are applying will require its own application with different selection criteria.  Be prepared to furnish financial information, submit to a criminal background check, and supply a set of references.  When choosing references, talk to the friends and family members who know you best.  They will be most able to communicate just how lucky a child will be to live in your home.

One must also decide early on the age, gender and ethnicity of the child they hope to adopt.  For parents that would be happy to adopt a school aged child, the wait may be less than it would be for an infant.  When making this decision, it is important to know that older children may come from backgrounds with a history of abuse or neglect.  Parents should not be discouraged by this fact, but they should be prepared for the extra love and attention that may be required.  Any prospective parents should feel free to talk to adoption agencies about any concerns they may have, or to seek out advice to make the transition smooth for parent and child.

Most reputable adoption agencies require a home visit.  This is to make sure that parents will be ready to provide a suitable environment for a child.  For many, this is the most stressful part of the adoption process, but it need not be.  The best thing that any couple can do is to be themselves.  Keep in mind that both you and the agency representative are working toward a common goal:  giving a child a good home.

Each state and country has different laws governing adoptions.  In many cases, it is in the best interest of the parents to speak with a lawyer throughout the process.  A lawyer will make sure that each step in an adoption is in accordance with state and federal laws and that any contracts that are signed are enforceable.  Fees for adoptions will also vary by state and agency.  Parents should only deal with agencies that are upfront about administrative costs.

It is common for couples to feel frustrated and hopeless in the face of a long adoption process, but keep reminding yourself that safeguards are in place for the welfare of children and parents alike.  Adopting a child will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
